The Manyana Factor

part 2

On to the atheist music and poetry:

From the "atheist music homepage" which
lists "all your favourite contemporary atheist music tunes":

"Two good cassettes of free thought music are already available, from
Freedom From Religion Foundation, PO Box 750, Madison, Wisconsin 53701:
"Reason's Greetings" and "My Thoughts Are Free"

Most of the lyrics are written by Dan Barker, former evangelistic preacher
for 18 years, now an atheist and staff PR person for FFRF. Dan is also a
pianist, and gives concerts, speaking and playing and singing - to groups
across the country. Dan is the author of: "Losing Faith in Faith", which I
HIGHLY recommend.

Some of the titles are: "Life Is Good"; Solstice Tribute; I'm Your Friendly
Neighborhood Atheist; The Stay-Away Pope Polka; Sunday Morning Blues;
Vatican Rage; Higher Mind; I don't Need Jesus; Bloodbrother; and Days of the
Theocracy.

Not your usual vicious anti-religious fare of your heavy-metal screamers
(for which we fall right into the trap of seeming uncouth and satanic by the
believers), but good and thoughtful (and undestandable) up-tunes --with
great potential for atheist kids to feel good about themselves."

Some Atheist Poetry by Brandon Seger

"Evolution"

When Darwin set sail to observe life on this Earth,
He returned with a theory that was given birth,
The theory was known as 'evolution,'
An idea that gave views on life's origin a revolution,
Now when I look at nature and see life's presence,
The riddle of life now makes all sense,
Yet the religious bother to attack this theory,
Viewing the idea as false, ludicrous, and eerie,
I simply scoff and continue to awe at life's diversity,
That a god could create this, I look upon with adversity

"Science"

At the dawn of early organized human society,
Ideas of how existence began were not in variety,
For early man developed a doctrine off his worldly vision,
And the name of his own creation was religion,
Only his religion was not a satisfying answer to life's inquisition,
So man later utilized the powers of science and eliminated superstition,
Now in the modern age, man knows much of his existence,
But these modern discoveries have been given resistence,
By the religious who struggle to reapply their fundamental beliefs,
Yet science has proven itself crucial, to resolve the riddle of natural
existence with relief.

"A Happy Atheist"

How fortunate I am to be atheist indeed,
I don't have to pray to any god with heed,
Nor do I follow a religion with irrationality,
Living secularly, I enjoy the world in true reality,
Without religion I am not morally corrupt,
My freethinking and logic do not disrupt,
My fellow infidels may agree with my psychology,
That the ultimate oppressor of freedom is theology

"Plea of a secularist"

In this modern day and age,
Still we discover fundamental rage,
The Christian violates the principle of separation of church and state,
It is he who keeps prayer in a public estate,
An event the founding fathers were not intending,
Yet on campuses the religious engage in their pretending,
Pretending that they are talking to a higher being,
Unfortunately it is a sight that I keep seeing,
Therefore it is up to us, whom the Bible call 'fools,'
To preserve church/state separation and keep prayer out of schools,
Yes, the Christian has a right to pray,
But it is a right that, in his privacy, it must stay

"The Atheist on death"

Unlike views that many I know hold,
The idea that I have is one considered bold,
Which is the atheist view on death and dying,
And it is one that I find satisfying,
In death, we no longer exist,
A life of any kind does not persist,
An afterlife is something that I abhor,
An eternal life would ultimately be a bore,
Since an afterlife has no evidence support,
A belief in one is one that I abort,
Does it scare me? It does not,
A part of me will still exist after I rot,
For even until the universe's final end,
My atoms will still be found around the bend

"An Atheist point in life"

What is the point of this one and only life?
The idea is one that may cause some strife,
The theist may claim a point relevant to his belief,
But it is meaningless to the atheist who has disbelief,
The religious have claimed we lack life's meaning,
Simply because in no religion are we believing,
Yet the atheist lives a life that is meaningful,
For of this life we shall live it to the full,
The religious live this life only for a next one,
The atheist knows that this plan has no fun,
In this one true life only will humanity strive,
Without the help of a fake god, we will thrive

"Student atheist's limerick"

After class and the ring of the bell,
A Christian said, "You're going to hell!"
To that condemning so vile,
I replied with a smile,
"Thanks, that idea sounds swell!"

A Poem by Meretricula

Imagine how free
And how relieved you'll feel!
Becoming an atheist like me
Has much appeal
Don't pray to a snivelling god
When you think you need a hand.
When you feel an achin' in your bod,
Try the soothing sounds of the Dave Matthews Band.

Don't bother attending church
Or wonder what Jesus would do.
If guidance is for what you search,
You'd be better off consulting the loo.

Don't waste your time
Worrying about heaven and hell.
Enjoy yourself while in your prime
For there is no afterlife in which to dwell.

Do mind your ethics.
Do appreciate all art.
Do enjoy leisurely breakfasts.
Do philosophise with Sartre.

Do sleep in on Sundays.
Do decorate a holiday tree.
Do open your mind to others' ways.
Do teach your mind to be free.

If you cease to believe in a god in the sky
What harm could there possibly be?
You might feel quite alone, but why?
At least no one's watching you pee.

You won't be struck by a lightening bolt
If you become deity free.
In fact you'll feel a mind-numbing jolt
And enter the realm of reality

"psybermagus" gives us

Beliefs

I follow the Tao so I aim to flow with my life
I do not believe in god the almighty
I do believe in other life forms
..such as spiritual beings on higher and lower planes
..and Aliens of this universe, but I doubt if they are on this planet!
I also claim to be a Chaoite, a Chaos Magickian, so I use beliefs
..as simply a means to an end, as part of the process
No belief is actually, unbendingly true, they are just models
Nothing is True, All is Permitted
Beliefs are dangerous, Ideas are better, they grow and change
Sometimes I believe in True Love
I use Tarot Cards as a useful and shockingly accurate thinking tool
Elvis is dead. Get over it
Jesus was just a gifted prophet
I believe in Evolution, as I believe in many things
The universe is forever expanding
.. which means it will be destroyed, not by the Big Crunch,
..but by entropy and cooling
I believe in Quantum Physics, and believe Einsteinian physics
..will one day marry Quantum Mechanics
I believe that each individual is master of their own destiny, but that
..one can gain much from observing the path one is already on
I believe that it doesn't really matter all that much
I believe in love at first site, but I'm not sure I believe in love
I believe everyone is insane, I believe insanity is the norm
I believe that I can make a difference
I believe in True Friends, soul mates

What I Believe

I believe in the rigid and obvious facts,
the simple yet practical punnett square,
the complicated yet helpful formula for the quadratic equation,
the old-fashioned yet eternal conservation of momentum and energy and mass,
the initial Boyle's Gas Law,
the revised Charles' Gas Law, the modified Avogadro's Gas Law, and the
perfect Ideal Gas Law.
But the fate of something is completely superstitious, unreliable, and
breakable.

I believe in chemicals directing our sixth sense,
I believe in materialism creating everything from a piece of dirt to the
universe,
I believe in evolution explaining why we all exist and how we all evolve,
I believe in spreading spider web,
casting defensive matrix, outlining stasis field, and enforcing mind
control.
And I believe in SlayerS_Boxer's theory that spending all the resources you
have to maximize your production is the key to success in the game and in
your real life.

"Atheist Songs"

"When a person asks about atheist music, most people draw pretty much a
blank. Sure, there are absolute TONS of material for Christians in America,
and all other religious/cultural groups I'm aware of have their music. But
what about music expressly written by and for atheists? I used to think that
such material was pretty rare and nearly impossible to find. It is out
there, as I have found, though it's less hard to find than I originally
thought. Here's a list of some pop music artists I've found so far, along
with a sample of their songs and lyrics.

The Dead Kennedys: Songs - Religious Vomit, Moral Majority

Bad Religion: Songs - Suffer, 1000 More Fools, At the Mercy of Imbeciles,
Shades of Truth, The Voracious March of Godliness, Faith Alone, We're Only
Gonna Die, Flat Earth Society

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Songs - Devil's Night Out, Holy Smoke

Pearl Jam: Songs - Do the evolution, Push Me, Pull Me, Last Kiss, Given to
Fly, Faithful

John Lennon: Songs - Instant Karma, God, Imagine

"Anyway, that's a list of my suggestions for people looking for atheist
music. It's not complete, but I've used most of the songs listed here to
fill a 90-minute tape to listen to in my car while I commute, and that's
what it's all about for me."
J. Eric Harrington aged 43

Then there is The Humanist Hymnal

"As a non-believer, I am not moved by the lyrics of sacred music. The music
itself, however, (some of the world's most beautiful music--- filled with
past associations and passions) still inspires, still thrills. Yet, it is no
longer a part of my life, for its supernatural lyrical content has no
meaning for me. "The Humanist Hymnal" is an effort to reclaim that music,
to put it back into my life in a way that my reason can accept. The
following selections are "revised" hymns and carols.

All are products of the real world, of nature, and of freethought. These
first few selections are offered in the spirit of sharing. Others will
follow. Please use them to spread the philosophy of humanism, of
brotherhood, in an un-supernatural way, especially during the winter
solstice holiday season. Reclaim the Music. Keep the good part---throw out
the garbage."

All Hail, the power of Darwin's name,
A bright and shining star.
Bring forth the evolutionary fish,
And place it on your car.
Bring forth the evolutionary fish,
And place it on your car.
In doing so you show the world
A Humanistic sign.

You question, and you think for yourself
Before you make up your mind.
You question, and you think for yourself
Before you make up your mind.
You're rational and open-minded
In your search for Truth.
You're skeptical of paranormal claims,
And gave up God in your youth.
You're skeptical of paranormal claims,
And gave up God in your youth.

All Hail, the power of Darwin's name,
A bright and shining star.
Bring forth the evolutionary fish,
And place it on your car.
Bring forth the evolutionary fish,
And place it on your car.

Evolution! Evolution! Evolution! Evolution!
for Darwin's Truth Omnipotent reigneth.
Evolution! Evolution! Evolution! Evolution!
...
To understand this world , We've only just begun,
to understand our world of Selfish Genes, of Selfish Genes;
and Nothing lasts for ever and ever,
and Nothing lasts for ever and ever,
and Nothing lasts for ever and ever,
and Nothing lasts for ever and ever.

Change is King,
for ever and ever. Evolution! Evolution!
the Gene is Lord,
for ever and ever. Evolution! Evolution!
Change is King,
for ever and ever. Evolution! Evolution!
the Gene is Lord,
for ever and ever. Evolution! Evolution!
...
Evolution! Evolution! Evolution! Evolution!

(Sung to the tune of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen")
THE WORLD OF RICHARD DAWKINS
Inspired by John Catalano's Website, "The World of Richard Dawkins"

The World of Richard Dawkins
Is a place where you will find
A scientific plethora
To stimulate your mind.
Expand your intellectual side;
Leave ignorance behind.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

He came from out of Africa,
As did we all, it seems.
His work has made the world aware
That we have selfish genes;
And thoughts that we hold sacred
May turn out to be just memes.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

A meme by definition
Is a virus of the mind.
The Bible is a favorite source
For stories of this kind,
Which glorify a watchmaker who
Turns out to be blind.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

The phenotype extended
Is a novel point of view.
It shows us what our genes affect
Beyond just me and you.
The world at large responds
To what our DNA can do.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

The river out of Eden
Flows along the banks of time.
It carries information
Down a long, unbroken line.
It's possible your DNA
May someday mix with mine.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

In climbing Mt. Improbable
Your chances may look bleak.
Perhaps around the backside
Is the very thing you seek--
A gradual slope that leads you
Ever onward to the peak.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

Unweaving of the rainbow
Is no art-destroying crime,
The poetry of Science
Speaks of truths that are sublime,
Whose elegance we celebrate
In music and in rhyme,
O, tidings of knowledge and truth,
Knowledge and truth.
O, tidings of knowledge and truth.

(Hark, the Herald Angels Sing)
HARKEN TO THE SONGS WE SING
Harken to the songs we sing.
Joy and hope and love we bring.
Peace on earth to every child.
Man and Nature reconciled.

Joyful, all ye nations rise.
Join the triumph over lies.
All together, now proclaim:
We are one, and all the same.

Harken to the songs we sing.
Joy and hope and love we bring.
Put aside your tribal ways.
Sing, no more, your hymns of praise.

There is nothing more divine than
Man and Nature, intertwined.
Look to science, look to reason;
End this supernatural season.

Stop believing mindless things.
Stop living life as underlings.
Harken to the songs we sing.
Joy and hope and love we bring.

Look around and you will see
Pain and human misery.
Wasted time you can't afford;
Kindness is its own reward.

All religion is a cancer.
Humanism is the answer.
Life is brief, but if you can,
Pause to help your fellow man.
Harken to the songs we sing.
Joy and hope and love we bring.

(I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day)
I HEARD THE BELLS OF FREETHOUGHT RING

I heard the bells of freethought ring,
Of reason and of doubt they sing;
Reminding us with every chime,
"Believing" stops a thinking mind.
Belief forbids your asking why.
Belief requires you live a lie.
Accepting without evidence
Is contradicting common sense.
Suspend belief and think today.
Just ask one question as you pray--
"With all the world's religious fights,
Can I be sure that I am right?"
For other faiths (you know it's true)
Feel just as strongly as you do.
They'll die for their beliefs as well.
Which one of you will burn in Hell?
Your Bible is your answerman.
They find theirs in their own Koran.
The message of my little song
Is "maybe everyone is wrong."

And now some lyrics from the professionals:

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
"Monty Python"

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...

...always lood on the bright side of life... (Whistle)
Always look on the light side of life...(Whistle)

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...(Whistle)
Come on. Always look on the bright side of life...(Whistle)

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
- give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you

And always look on the bright side of life...(Whistle)
Always look on the right side of life...(Whistle)
Come on guys, cheer up.

Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
Worse things happen at sea you know.
Always look on the bright side of life...

I mean - what have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing
- you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing.

Always look on the right side of life...

God
by John Lennon

God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I'll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain

I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra

I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that's reality...
